I was passed by a new Camaro earlier today. They have LED brake lights (finally) but Chevy couldn’t even be bothered to engineer it so that all 3 brake lights turn off at the same time.
Seriously, watch for it next time. I saw it s few times when he kept tapping the brakes to cut people off and squeeze in to get to an exit (Camaro owners gonna Camaro...) and the outboard taillights stay lit about half a second longer than the middle one. Not a HUGE deal I guess, but nobody else’s LED lights do that. Come on GM.

Here’s something I’ve wondered: why does BMW go back and forth on offering LED taillights? The E46 had optional LEDs, the E9x started out with regular bulbs then regained LEDs when it was refreshed, and the F3x is back to regular bulbs. Now that it’s being refreshed, maybe it’s getting LEDs again?
At least my post-refresh E92 has LEDs but seriously BMW, make up your mind!

I have also wondered that. Maybe I pay more attention than others do, but the E46 got LEDs in 04 only but some E60s have them , other’s don’t. Doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason.

You had me curious, so I did this:

Just that sliiiiiight difference kicks my OCD into high gear

If you’re gonna complain about something as much of a non-issue as this, at least use a picture of a Camaro with LED equipped tail lights.

Good point, i just googled “2015 Camaro rear” and ran with it.
But is it really a non issue? I’ll admit it’s trivial and I’m slightly OCD about this stuff (cars that have standard bulbs and LEDs that illuminate at different rates irk me too). It just says to me that a very obvious shortcut was made on a $30,000-$50,000 car. It can’t be hard to sync them, literally every other car company has done it correctly

Probably something to do with the flashing CHMSL. It also helps grab attention.

Flashing CHMSL?

It’s a really easy way to distinguish between “old” and “new” on midcycle refreshes. I’m surprised more don’t do it.

Ah, I wonder if it's pressure sensitive. I've seen a few cars with the middle light not illuminating under light braking, kinda neat.

If mid-timed LED’s bother you that much don’t ever look at how misaligned they are between body and hatch/trunk panels on new Lincolns...

Central *something* (edit: High) Mounted Stop Light, I’m assuming.

Center High Mounted Stop Lamp. There have been some experiments with making them flash under heavy braking, but I suspect this is just lazy engineering.

Flashing center lights are very helpful. People pay extra attention when they see a flashing light. My dad installed an aftermarket solution on his Miata for this very reason.

Seems intentional to me, good for drawing attention to the car.

I think in the tests they’ve done, flashing helped, but it appeared to be just the novelty that helped. If ever car had a flashing CHMSL there wouldn’t be much gain (though apparently this is true of the CHMSL itself as well, though it does at least provide extra redundancy for people’s terribly maintained cars).

Probably so that for the refresh they can add them back in as a “new feature”.

Also CHMSL’s from GM are delayed just a bit when turning off and turn on just a bit before the brake lights. I think FCA may do this as well.

If what you have in your picture is the Camaro you saw, it’s not a new one. That’s the last-gen Camaro.

Here’s news: yes, other cars do it, it’s just this one is more likely to lodge it’s ass in your face where you can see it than most cars. And you’re more likely to be looking here than at other cars.
But I get it, it bugs me too sometimes.

make it loop for like 20 min. See if we can get him really goin.

wow that’s annoying, seems like they did that on purpose
![]() 06/14/2016 at 09:30 |

Thing is, I’ve seen other cars do it. My M3 did it, I think I’ve seen Chargers do it, tons of cars with optional spoilers with built in third brake lights do it.

My bigger gripe is that the LED ring around the taillights don’t go all around and have that gap at the bottom middle. My friend has a 1LE that I was following around Saturday night, and it really started to bug me.

My wife’s ‘06 Malibu (total lemon - hated that car) did that. Except with it, the left taillight came on first.

that's GM for ya

i have 2 friends with Camaros, one with the LED's and one without. both do it, and they do it in a pyramid pattern with the top lighting up later and dimming earlier. it's kinda neat IMO
